Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU) is a private institution located in Da Nang, Vietnam. It focuses on medical education, offering courses in medicine, dentistry, and other health-related fields. The university aims to provide quality education with a strong emphasis on clinical training and research to prepare students for professional healthcare careers. PCTU also fosters collaboration with international institutions, promoting a global perspective in medical education.
I. History-Phan Chau Trinh University
Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU) was established on August 6, 2007, by Decision 989/QĐ-TTg issued by the Prime Minister at the time. The university’s first campus was located in the heart of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The founders, committed to enhancing education in their native Quang Nam, aimed to honor the legacy of Phan Chau Trinh, a revered nationalist. Among the founders were Madam Nguyen Thi Binh, former Vice President and granddaughter of Phan Chau Trinh; writer and culture researcher Nguyen Ngoc, former President of the Vietnam Literature Association; and Professor Hoang Tuy, former Director of the Vietnam Institute of Mathematics.
At the beginning the University provided courses like Social Sciences & Humanities, Tour Guide, Business Management, Accounting and Finance, Linguistic, etc. Majority of the students were from Quang Nam itself and Central Vietnam, as well as Tay Nguyen Highland.
Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU) aims to establish itself as a high-quality institution specializing in medicine, meeting both international and Ministry of Education and Training standards. The university focuses on enhancing practical skills by integrating cutting-edge research and technology into its programs, blending theory with hands-on experience.
On August 12, 2017, Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung was appointed as the head of PCTU. Under his leadership, the university was authorized by the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Health to offer undergraduate programs in medicine on December 28, 2017, fulfilling Dr. Tung’s long-held aspiration. His mission is to elevate the reputation and image of future doctors in the eyes of patients and the community. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in PCTU’s development.
II. Facilities-Phan Chau Trinh University
Infrastructure plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of education at Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU). The university offers well-equipped classrooms, libraries, and practice hospitals to support both teaching and learning. Modern equipment and machinery are provided, along with a state-of-the-art laboratory system to meet students’ academic and research needs.

III. Academics overview-General Practice MD
1. The goals and training strategy of PCTU’s medical program are as follows:
- First and foremost, the goal is to nurture doctors with strong ethics, integrity, genuine compassion, and a sense of responsibility. These qualities are essential not only for doctors but for everyone.
- Secondly, resilience is key. It enables doctors to face challenges, diseases, and interpersonal conflicts.
- Thirdly, excellent communication skills are crucial for doctors to interact effectively with patients and build trust.
- Fourthly, teamwork is vital. In a surgical case, for instance, successful outcomes depend on coordination among the surgeon, anesthesiologist, assistants, and nurses. Doctors seldom work in isolation, so strong teamwork skills are necessary.
- Fifthly, leadership or management skills are essential for doctors. Many students might question why leadership is important in medicine, but doctors lead small teams of colleagues, nurses, assistants, and even students. Beyond medical knowledge, they need the ability to manage conflicts and guide others.
Eventually, doctors may become hospital directors or lead healthcare organizations, where strong management skills are critical. Poor leadership can impact hospital quality and work environments. Additionally, doctors represent their institutions at national and international conferences and may advise governments on healthcare policies. To shape the future of healthcare and enact reforms, doctors require advanced leadership skills.
In addition, medical students also need to develop their logical thinking, critical thinking skills, time management skills, and task management skills (knowing how to prioritize tasks). They should also gain experience in volunteer work, community engagement, and working in the healthcare field.
With these core values in mind, Phan Chau Trinh University emphasizes the importance of skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and leadership. These skills, often overlooked in traditional training for general practitioners, are now integrated into the university’s curriculum.
Additionally, due to the global nature of healthcare and the growing demand for medical services for foreign patients, students are educated on various cultures and customs. Opportunities for international internships are also provided, allowing students to broaden their understanding of global health issues.
The university’s training philosophy focuses on cultivating the three T: Tam (Attitude), Tri (Knowledge), and Tay nghe (Skills)
2. Phan Chau Trinh University’s training strategy is based on four pillars:
- Early and Continuous Internships: From the first year, students gain hands-on experience in hospitals, developing practical skills under close supervision by lecturers who are also doctors.
- Modern Infrastructure: The university offers well-equipped facilities, including anatomy labs and clinical practice rooms, enhancing practical learning.
- Research and Clinical Integration: The Biomedical Research and Technology Application Center (BMTC) supports research and applies biotechnology to improve diagnostics and treatments.
- Specialized English Training: Students learn medical English, enabling access to global medical knowledge and preparing them for international careers.
Phan Chau Trinh University’s Faculty of Medicine, with expert faculty, modern facilities, and international teaching methods, trains doctors ready to improve the nation’s healthcare. Graduates receive a Doctor degree issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.
